In many family law cases, the adults are so focused on their own conflict that the needs of the children can get lost in the shuffle. This is where a Guardian Ad Litem, or GAL, comes in.
When I serve as a GAL, my client isn't the mom or the dad: it’s the child. My responsibility is to investigate the situation and report back to the court about what is truly in the child's best interests. This might involve visiting the home, talking to teachers, and observing the child’s interactions with both parents.
Being a Jennings County attorney means caring about the future of our community, and that starts with our kids. A GAL provides the judge with an objective view of the situation. I take this role very seriously because I know the impact these decisions have on a young person's life.
If you are involved in a high-conflict custody case, having a GAL can actually help de-escalate the situation. It moves the focus away from "who is right" and back to "what do the kids need."
I’ve always believed that being a "small town lawyer" is about more than just knowing the law: it’s about knowing the people. My office is located in Vernon, and I take pride in being accessible to my neighbors. Whether you’re coming from Hayden or Scipio, I want you to feel like you’re getting personal attention, not just being treated like another case number.
I’ve handled a wide variety of complex legal matters during my career, and that experience allows me to see the big picture. I’m honest about what to expect, including practical details like travel fees or the likelihood of a certain outcome. I won't give you a "sales pitch"; I'll give you the truth.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the legal system, remember that you have choices. You don't have to follow the most difficult path.
